Este texto, que reproduz aula inaugural proferida na abertura do ano letivo de 1997 da EEAN, trata do processo denominado de globalização, discutindo seus diferentes significados e implicações para países como o Brasil, mostrando sua face excludente e concentradora de riqueza em escala mundial, ampliando o fosso entre ricos e pobres. Com base nesse cenário, situa as denominadas políticas de ajuste e seu caráter neoliberal, detalhando o "pacote" de reformas por elas preconizadas. Mostra como, infelizmente, as formas e os conteúdos adotados por essas políticas não têm sido neutras no tocante à situação social e às políticas sociais dos países latino-americanos, apontando suas peculiaridades para o Brasil. Apresenta ainda a tradução dessas políticas para a área de Saúde, criticando a "nova" divisão de tarefas entre o Estado e o Setor Privado proposta pelo projeto neoliberal, chamando a atenção para a dualidade perversa por ele gerada. Finalmente, discute qual seria o papel social do Enfermeiro diante desse cenário, destacando as possibilidades de mudança e as potencialidades de atuação desse profissional como agente de transformação.

This text, a transcription of the inaugural lecture made at the opening of the academic year at EEAN in 1997, is concerned about the process called globalization, discussing its different meanings and implications to countries like Brazil, presenting its excluding and wealth concentrating face on world scale, enlarging the gap between the rich and the poor. Considering this scenario, it points out the so called adjustement policies and its neoliberal character, detailing the "package" of reforms that they advocate. It shows how, unfortunately, the forms and contents adopted by these policies haven't been neutral regarding to the social situation and social policies in Latin American countries, pointing at its peculiarities in Brazil. It also presents a translation of these policies to Health area, criticizing the "new" work division between the State and the Private Sector, proposed by the neoliberal project, drawing attention to the perverse duality it created. Finally, it discusses the Nurse's social role in this scenario, pointing out this professional's possibilities of changing and potentialities of action as agent of transformation.
